Dear readers, the new ‘summer’ issue of Detektor revue 3/2019 has just left the printers and is on its way to your letterboxes. As always, we’ll give you a sneak peek at it in advance.

In the opening feature ‘Artefact of the Month’, well-preserved Feldpostkorrespondenzkarte postcards are highlighted in the article ‘Now I think more of home… the lives of our soldiers during the First World War’. ‘The Treasure from Likava Castle’ is the title of an interview with the Slovak archaeologist Martin Furman about the discovery of a truly exceptional hoard of almost two thousand coins from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries.

‘Porcelain Saturday’ or ‘The Sudeten Expedition’ – that is what Versingetorix called his report on a successful trip to the Sudetenland. This is followed by a look back at the 23rd friendly gathering of treasure hunters with Detektorweb in the photo report ‘Sloup 2019’. Every collaboration is about people, so we have titled this compilation of material on a programme – as yet unique in our country – involving collaboration between museums and metal detectorists, which has been launched in the South Moravian Region; an archaeologist and two metal detectorists express their views on this issue here.

‘Long-Range Scams’ is the apt title of an insightful article by our long-standing contributor and specialist in the operation and design of metal detectors, Zdeněk Jarchovský, on how long-range detectors work – or rather, do not work. To mark the publication of the fascinating and well-researched book Poľné fľaše, we present an interview with its authors, the knowledgeable historians and museologists Pavel Habáň and Tibor Díte. For those who do not wish to treat their finds like delicate flowers or irreversibly damage them through improper handling, the next instalment of our series ‘The Conservator’s Lair’ is dedicated to you. Acci is sharing his practical experience as a museum conservator with you. This time, we’ll be offering advice on how to care for ceramic finds.

Alexander Coppel – a famous manufacturer with a tragic end – is the subject of another article by our Slovak contributor PetkoZberatel, who presents unique items from his exceptional collection of bladed weapons – this time it is the Flieger Offiziersdolch dagger, better known in these parts as the Luftwaffe Model 2 dagger. In an article with the telling title ‘Restoration of a Czechoslovak Army Officer’s Buckle’, treasure hunter JendaKvaska describes how he managed to restore a find to its former glory.

The regular ‘Readers’ Letters’ column returns this time to the article ‘Memories of Operation Submarine’. Have you introduced anyone else to treasure hunting? That is the question we put to treasure hunters in your favourite poll. Those interested in military technology will not be disappointed this time either – a study by the military technology historian Jan Škarka focuses on another outstanding product from Škoda: the KI 37/70mm BA/AB infantry gun ‘The Secret’ – that is the title Zdeněk Jarchovský gave to his short story, written not only for metal detectorists. Ivo Tomáš, a collector and expert, answers your questions about button finds in the regular column ‘The Button Collector’s Advice Corner’.
