Dear readers, the latest issue of Detektor revue (labelled No. 2/2019) is currently leaving the printers and making its way to your letterboxes. As always, we’ll give you a sneak peek at it in advance.

In the opening ‘Artefact of the Month’ section, one ‘Election Attic’ piece recalls the dramatic local elections of 1938. ‘Record-breaking treasure of Czech “brakteates”’ is the title of an interview with Jiří Militký, a numismatist and archaeologist at the National Museum, about a truly unique treasure find comprising almost 1,300 Czech bracteates – and we were there to witness its recovery!

‘Are you managing to sort, clean and identify your finds on an ongoing basis?’ is the question we put to treasure hunters in your favourite Poll. ‘Gold Is Everywhere, or A Guide to Getting Poor Quickly’ is the title of an interview with three-time world champion in gold panning, geologist Veronika Štědrá. In the regular column ‘Archaeological Snippets’, you will discover, amongst other things, the oldest depiction of an animal’s form, and you are sure to be horrified by the most widespread ritual sacrifice of children in history. ‘A dream come true’ – that is what Zbyněk called his account of the discovery of a magnificent Roman coin.

‘The Secret of the Divining Room on the Husy Plateau’ is the title of another article by our long-standing contributor Josef Procházka, in which he this time sheds some light on the divining room of our ancient ancestors. Zdeněk Brož visited the high-altitude battlefields of the First World War in the Slovenian Alps and titled his article from there ‘Why won’t we find anything there anymore?’ To mark the 500th anniversary – commemorating the fact that exactly half a century ago the Šlik family began minting their family coins from Jáchymov silver – we present an article by Josef Petráň entitled ‘In the Beginning Was the Joachimsthaler’.

Ivo Tomáš, a collector and expert, answers your questions about button finds in the regular column ‘The Button Collector’s Advice Corner’. In the ninth instalment of a series of interviews with Kasander, the treasure hunter Nek recalls the early days of metal-detecting in the Czech Republic in the 1990s and beyond. This one is called ‘Kordík from Column K’. H. Franka from Rokycany. In the article ‘Collecting War Rings’, treasure hunter Viki shares her passion with us.

‘Better than gold at home in a display cabinet’ is the title of Honza’s article, in which he describes his surprise at finding yet another ‘Celt’ in such a short space of time. Those interested in military technology will not be disappointed this time either – a study by the military technology historian Jan Škarka focuses this time on the outstanding Swedish 4 cm Bofors L/60 anti-aircraft gun. ‘Sekera’ is the title of another magical short story, Rovina, which unfolds from a single unusual find.
