Dear readers,

The latest issue of Detektor revue has just left the printers and is on its way to your letterboxes and the usual retail outlets. And, as always, here’s a little taster to whet your appetite.

As usual, we begin with the ‘Artefact of the Month’ section, which this time features a rather unusual object aptly characterised by the headline: Neither a medal nor a coin This is followed by a story from treasure hunter Pavel entitled ‘A Treasure Hunt Under the Sign of Taurus’, in which he describes the circumstances of his exceptional find – a small bull figurine from the La Tène period. ‘Grandma “Lucky”’ – that is, finds in places where I really wouldn’t have expected them – is the title of a report by Libra 56 on some fine finds from places that had supposedly been thoroughly searched. “Have you ever suffered an injury whilst searching?” is the question we put to treasure hunters in our regular ‘Poll’ section. In the article ‘50 Years On’, ‘railway archaeologist’ Pavel sets out with his metal detector to trace the sites of long-ago steam locomotive accidents.

We went to see what it’s like to go treasure hunting in the land of the lords; to find out how it went, read Miroslav UC Kratochvíl’s report from the first international XP gathering in England, the XP GOLD SUMMER RALLY 2016. Such ordinary digging is the subject of Hans Lauper’s extraordinary report on expeditions to Velká louka, the site of clashes between partisans and the Germans. The ‘Archaeological Snippets’ section features the following reports: Will the Šobes Vineyard be added to the UNESCO list? The northernmost Roman camp in the country and Is it the oldest piece of European jewellery from Brno? Collector Ivo Tomáš answers your questions in the ‘Knoflíkář’s Advice Corner’ section. In this issue, we present a list of articles submitted to the Metal Detector Readers’ Competition, from which you can choose the one that interests you most and vote for the winner of the 8th edition of our readers’ competition.

In the article The Devil Without a Horse and St Nicholas, Bobesak recounts one of his treasure hunts that ended with a rather unusual find. ‘Heroes, Traitors and Murderers’ is the title of an article describing the search by US Army veteran Manuel F. Van Eycka is named after American and Czechoslovak airmen who fell on the European battlefields of the Second World War, primarily within the territory of the former Czechoslovakia. This instalment of our Advice Column is dedicated to the Double-headed Eagle and local patron saints. Those interested in military technology will certainly welcome another study by the military technology historian Jan Škarka, this time on the subject of the 5cm bell-shaped mortar (B10 ‘Weapon U’). And finally, we are all certainly looking forward to the fifth instalment of the diary of our fellow treasure hunter Jarda, who has been keeping a record since the 1990s – that is, from the pioneering days of metal-detecting in our country. We are republishing them under the title The Treasure Hunter’s Testament.
